At River Park Leisure Centre

Updated 1st June

Keep Fit (10.30 – 11.30)

There will not be any classes on Tuesdays 25th June and 9th July.

Bowls – change of dates

Because of more home matches to be played by the Hyde Abbey Club there will be no Thursday afternoon sessions on Thursdays 6th, 20th and 27th June. As a replacement play will take place on Wednesdays June 19th and 26th from 2 – 4 pm and cost £2.00 per session. Registration should be carried out at 1.45 pm. There will be no Wednesday replacement session on 5th June.

Annual Bowls Club Competition

This will take place at the Hyde Abbey ground on Tuesday 4th June, starting at 1.30 pm. In the event of rain the competition will move indoors to the Riverside Bowls Club. Tea, cake and sandwiches will be provided after the games.

Pilates

There will be no pilates class on Thursday 6th June.

Cheque payments
The club's bank is now charging 30p per cheque banked. As a consequence the Treasurer is asking that, where possible, all payments made to the club are made by internet banking (Winchester Fitness and Sports Club, sort code 60-83-01 and a/c 20381880) or by cash.

New Leisure Centre

I had a meeting on 29th May with Mandy Ford (Head of Sport for Winchester City Council) and Alison Norman (Contracts Manager for Everyone Active, the operators for the new centre at Bar End). The purpose of the meeting was for me to give Alison an idea of how the club runs, what we provide and when, and what ideas we had for development in the future. It was a very useful time although there are still currently no plans to increase the size of the sports hall. It remains to be seen what impact the new political leadership of the council has on this. The good news which I am able to impart is that there are plans to put in electronic systems which will enable users of the new centre to park free of charge for up to 3 hours.

Additional Day

9 short tennis and 1 badminton player were interested in an additional session on Friday mornings. This is insufficient to make this viable for the club to run. However discussions are being held as to the possibility of the leisure centre running a drop-in short tennis session which would be open to all. Further details will be circulated once there is something more certain to report.

Short Tennis Coaching

8 members have expressed an interest in this so it is planned to go ahead with this on Thursdays from 12.00 to 13.00; dates will be circulated soon and we can then finalise who is able to attend. Tony Westlake will be the coach.  If you are interested but haven't yet applied please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and your name can be added to the (reserve) list.

Gym
The July- September application list will go on the noticeboard at 10.00 next Tuesday 4th June.

Summer Footwear Advice from the Sports Podiatrist who spoke to some of us on 16th May

So summer is coming, well the season is, I can't do anything about the weather itself! Summer footwear is just as important as the winter, however if it does get nice and warm it can be a little more difficult to choose what to wear.

Ideally we would like people to wear a sandal that has a strap around the back and the front, however, we do live in the real world and understand that some people just do not like wearing these. So, looking at a sandal, having something with a strap over the top is better than your conventional thong style flip-flop, making sure the sandal is nice and stiff throughout the sole will also be helpful.Strive Sandal

There are some brands that actually build an off-the-shelf insole, if you wear insoles, to help support the foot in their sandals and they are Strive and Vionic. We are going to be able to supply Strive sandals to you as well.Another good choice is Birkenstock.

Ideally we want to try and avoid your normal flip-flops. These are absolutely fine for short periods of use, I call them the chips and ice cream solution, in moderation they are fine, so if you are on holiday and you are walking down the beach or walking to the bar to go drink it's fine, however I wouldn't do an all day walking tour in them.

If you use orthoses that have a slightly more complex prescription, and some additions like a metatarsal dome, there are certain companies like Noak (sandals pictured), Wolky  and there are few smaller German brands as well, that have a removable foot bed so you can put your orthoses in them.

We also have the ability to make bespoke sandals, so we can build your prescription directly into the sandals foot bed, so you also have your orthoses with you, they cost the same as custom orthoses, however offers are available for those who order custom orthoses at the same time or have custom orthoses from us already.

And if you suffer with heel pain, arthritis in the middle of the foot or the big toe FIT flops (not flip flops) can be fantastic.

Lastly, however most importantly, please please please please do not forget to put suncream on your feet. We have seen some nasty episodes of sunburn on the feet and it's not pleasant at all, as putting any form of the footwear on will just be painful, and if you are super lucky and get sunburn on the sole of your foot that is pain on a whole new level!
